<p dir="ltr">The ENHAnCE project provides research and training opportunities for early-stage researchers in the fields of Prognostics and Health Management (PHM), structural health monitoring (SHM), Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE), Maintenance Modelling, Damage Modelling, Manufacturing Engineering and Smart Structures. Research within the network encompasses a number of disciplines like structural engineering, mathematics &amp; physics, materials &amp; manufacturing engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science.</p>

     <p></p><p>CINBIO aims at generating first class science; training in values of excellence and make returns to the society, under a multidisciplinary approach. It is working on basic, applied and clinical research, to address prevention, diagnosis and therapy in Biomedicine.</p>
<p>Intelligent Materials and Systems Laboratory is an interdisciplinary research group established in 2003 in University of Tartu, Institute of Technology. Our goal is, by bringing together knowledge from diverse fields of expertise, to develop new materials and their control and applications. Exploitation of innovative materials will in turn permit building devices, different and in many ways superior to conventional machines. The scientific background of our staff as well as the laboratory equipment permits research activities on the borderline of computational material science, material science, robotics, chemistry, computer science and electronics.</p>
<p>We are opening a new strategic roadmap with four main strategic areas:</p>
<p>Project Background: Electroactive polymers (EAP) consist of materials capable of changing dimensions and/or shape in response to electrical stimuli. Most EAPs are also capable of generating electrical energy in response to applied mechanical forces. Therefore, they have potential as sensors. These <strong>polymeric materials exhibit properties well beyond what conventional metal or plastic-based actuators can offer</strong>, including very <strong>high mechanical flexibility</strong> (can be stretched to twice their initial size), <strong>low density</strong>, a high grade of processability, <strong>scalability</strong>, <strong>microfabrication readiness</strong> and, in most cases, <strong>low cost</strong>. Micro-EAPs enable a new broad range of applications for which large strains and forces are desirable, and for which built-in intelligence is necessary. One type of EAPs are <strong>ionic EAP (IEAP). </strong>They rely on ion and solvent transport to cause volume changes of the polymeric phase. When an electric field is applied to the device, it drives the motion of these ions and the entrained solvent, leading to swelling or contraction when these ions enter or leave regions of the polymer. IEAPs including Conducting Polymers (CP), present several advantages, including the capability of large bending deformation even at low (~1%) intrinsic strains of the electroactive layer; low voltages operation (0.3-5V), that make them well suited for several applications especially interfacing with biology. These materials have intrinsic capability to be also electrochemical and mechanical sensors, which also allows to design self-sensing transducers in some cases.</p>

<p><strong>Profile:</strong> The Biomedical Research Center (CINBIO) offers <strong>up to 3 full-time positions REC</strong><strong>OGNIZED RESEARCHERS, PI JUNIOR</strong><strong>. </strong></p>
<p>The main objectives are to realize a multiscale physics model to develop model for conductive polymer based actuators based on physical and electrochemical principles. It involves to develop polarizable force filed for atom-atom interaction based simulation models (Molecular dynamics and kinetics) with further integration if output parameters into Finite element analyses computations. The final result is reasonable physics and electrochemistry based model which is enable to give predictive results for electrochemomechanical transducer behavior.</p>

<p>The optimization of advanced Lithium Ion Battery (LIB) manufacturing and cell design remains a challenging multi-variable task, subject to constraints like the desired final performance, the availability of raw materials, the cost, the safety, the environmental impact and the recyclability. The roadmap of the large scale European initiative Battery 2030+ highlights these issues and proposes research actions which aims at revolutionizing the way we conceive batteries today. Among them, the use of <strong>Artificial Intelligence</strong> (AI) tools to carry out inverse design of materials interfaces is recognized as of paramount importance. The main objective of this PhD is to use AI to unravel interdependencies between manufacturing parameters, electrode properties, cell design and performance and using these algorithms for inverse design in the battery field.</p>
<p>The main objective of this PhD is the development and demonstrate an <strong>innovative AI-driven platform</strong> able to carry out two complementary tasks: 1) <strong>unravel interdependencies</strong> between battery manufacturing parameters and electrode properties, cell design and performance; 2) <strong>carry out inverse design</strong>, <em>i.e.</em> predicting needed electrode properties (<em>e.g.</em> porosity, loading) to reach a desired performance at the cell level, and predicting manufacturing parameters needed to achieve electrodes with such properties.</p>
<p><u>Specific Objective</u>:</p>
<ul><li>Set the database infrastructure from the batter characterization data available at LRCS and CIDETEC. Defining data and files standards.</li>

<p><u>Additional information</u>:</p>
<p>The PhD candidate will be devoted 100% to the Big Data work. Experimental work will be carried out through other common projects between LRCS and CIDETEC. The work plan includes alternating work stays between LRCS (Amiens, France) and CIDETEC Energy Storage (Donostia-San Sebastian, Spain). The thesis expenses are covered by the ALISTORE-European Research Institute.</p>
<p><u>The hosting institutes</u>:</p>
<p>The Laboratoire de Réactivité et Chimie des Solides (LRCS) was founded in 1968 and is a mixed research unit of CNRS and Université de Picardie Jules Verne (Amiens, France). LRCS employs more than 100 people representing more than 25 nationalities. LRCS is located in the beautiful city of Amiens, France.</p>
<p>LRCS has a strong expertise on rechargeable battery technologies (lithium-ion batteries, lithium-air, sodium-ion, lithium sulfur, all-solid state batteries, redox flow batteries…) supported on deep expertise on materials synthesis and characterization, electrochemistry, multiscale computational techniques and artificial intelligence tools applied to battery research.</p>
<p>Additionally, LRCS is strongly involved in partnership-oriented research and interdisciplinarity, in particular in the context of the ALISTORE European Research Institute (ERI) (involving more than 10 countries and 20 laboratories) and at the French level through the RS2E network which gathers 17 laboratories, 15 industrial partners and 3 public institutions engaging in rechargeable batteries and supercacitors research. RS2E and ALISTORE-ERI were both founded by the lab’s former director, Prof. Jean-Marie Tarascon.</p>
<p>LRCS was/is involved in numerous European projects (FP7/H2020) such as EUROLIS, PUMA MIND, HELIS, POROUS4APP, NAIADES, SONAR...and it is hosting Prof. Alejandro A. Franco&#39;s ERC Consolidator project team (ARTISTIC). LRCS is strongly involved, through RS2E, in the core group of the Battery 2030+, the initiative for a long-term large-scale research program towards the European battery of the future.</p>
<p>A leading-edge fundamental research lab, LRCS also seeks to facilitate technology transfer to the industry through RS2E’s pre-transfer equipment (18650 batteries prototyping, safety, upscaling). LRCS is also working closely with companies (Renault, EDF, Solvay, Safran, Umicore…) to give its findings a chance to reach the market and hopefully… your daily life!</p>
<p>CIDETEC Energy Storage is specialised in creating new battery technologies according to specific challenges, and its ultimate transference to the industry. The institute has the capacity to develop complete products and processes and offers material validation, pilot manufacture, pack engineering and battery testing services. CIDETEC overall workforce consists of 180 employees, 95 % of whom are university graduates and 45 % PhD holders. Its volume of activity came up to € 13.1M in 2018. CIDETEC is located in the beautiful city of Donostia-San Sebastian, Spain.</p>
<p>CIDETEC Energy Storage involves up to 60 specialized researchers distributed into two technological units: Materials for Energy –approx. 2/3 of the workforce with a background of chemistry, electrochemistry and materials- and Systems Engineering - mainly electrical and mechanical engineers. As a result of this approach, CIDETEC Energy Storage cooperates closely with the industry in the context of bilateral, direct contract research and product development projects, both at the National and International level.</p>
<p>CIDETEC Energy Storage is heavily involved in the European batteries community, including several EU level platforms and associations where energy storage and its applications is at the core. We are active member in several industrial and research associations and platforms like the ETIP Batteries Europe, the European Battery Alliance (EBA), EGVIA, EARPA, EMIRI or EERA. In particular, Dr Oscar Miguel, Director of CIDETEC Energy Storage, was appointed Chairman of Working Group #4 on Cell design and Manufacturing within the recently launched ETIP Batteries Europe.</p>
<p>CIDETEC Energy Storage is also regular participant in H2020 European funded projects, frequently from the coordination of international consortia –currently CIDETEC Energy Storage is coordinator of iModBatt, iHeCoBatt, DEFACTO and E-Magic projects. We accumulate more than 15 participations in EU funded R+D battery projects under FP7 and H2020. </ul><p>In the 2014-2020 financial period INEA is managing over 9.000 projects under both programmes. The implementation of these programmes is expected to continue beyond 2020. <p>Description of the job</p>
<p>The project manager will be responsible for a portfolio of transport research and innovation projects in one or more of the following five fields:</p>
<ul><li>Batteries, electrical systems and management systems for electric vehicles;</li>
<li>Automated transport, intelligent transport systems and data management;</li>
<li>Clean propulsion, safety and smart services in surface transport;</li>
<li>Technologies, structures and materials for aviation and air mobility;</li>
<li>Clean propulsion, technologies and smart services in waterborne transport.</li>
</ul><p>The projects can cover a range of development levels, from lab-based research, through demonstration to market uptake. The project manager will work autonomously under the authority of a team leader. He/she will also collaborate fully with a wider team of colleagues in the Agency and the European Commission.</p>
<p>The project manager will contribute to the development and implementation of relevant policies falling under EC treaties in the field of Transport research and innovation through the management of projects in the programmes under the responsibility of the Agency, primarily those relating to the delegated activities to be managed under the Horizon 2020 Transport Challenge and any other delegated programmes.</p>

<p>The PhD position is part of the Marie Curie Training Network <em>ECO DRIVE</em> which is a European project running from March 2020 until February 2024. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement number 858018. The coordinator of the project is the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. The project consortium consists of four European universities, four industrial companies (two automotive OEMs) and one research organisation.</p>
<p>Noise and vibration in eco-efficient (i.e. mostly electric) powertrains is at the core of the <em>ECO DRIVE</em> project. It offers a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary research and training programme to Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) to provide Europe with a new generation of NVH research engineers who have a talent and a passion for the automotive industry. The ESRs will combine basic scientific research (method development, concept solutions, experimental lab tests, etc.) with practical, industry-focused training (validation of methods and tools on powertrain test benches, in full vehicle, etc.). The project will be very dynamic, with an emphasis on ensuring ESRs gain maximum benefit from moving between the research organisations and the industry partners.</p>
<p>Within this project we are seeking an early‐stage researcher (ESR) <strong>for a duration of 36 months</strong> to join the Department of Acoustical Engineering at Fraunhofer IWU in Dresden. The earliest starting date is March 2020. The chosen candidate will be registered as a PhD student at KU Leuven&#39;s Noise and Vibration Research Group ([http://www.mech.kuleuven.be/mod www.mech.kuleuven.be/mod]) which is part of the Mechanical Engineering Department and is headed by Prof. Wim Desmet. <strong>The position includes secondments to Siemens Industry Software (Belgium) and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium).</strong></p>
<p><strong>Acoustical Engineering at Fraunhofer IWU</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Fraunhofer IWU is an Institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in Germany. The main research focus is on the development of intelligent production devices and the optimisation of related manufacturing processes. The Department of Acoustical Engineering has rich experience in the development of active and passive systems for noise and vibration control for a wide range of applications. Researchers are developing methodologies for prediction of acoustical phenomena in vehicles mostly for gearboxes and electrical drives. Simulation methods used cover noise excitation mechanisms and noise transfer within a system while taking into account subsystem interactions using multi-domain simulation approaches as well as data capture and analysis at bespoke test rigs.</p>
<p><strong>Project Background</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>As manufacturers shift to vehicles that produce reduced levels of air pollution – with less particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and greenhouse gases – there are knock-on effects with respect to other forms of pollution, particularly noise pollution, which according to the World Health Organisation, comes second only to air pollution in its harmful effects and is responsible for hearing loss, learning problems in children and sleep disturbance. The problem is that attempts to reduce air pollution, e.g. by producing lightweight cars, often lead to increased levels of noise, due to complex mechano-acoustic effects. Also with electric vehicles (EVs), the absence of the damping effect of a large internal combustion (IC) engine means that intrusive sounds from other components create customer dissatisfaction and negatively affect people in close proximity to the vehicle. It is often wrongly assumed that EVs are silent; whereas in reality they create a great deal of high-frequency disturbance. To overcome some of the many challenges associated with these noise-related problems, the <em>ECO DRIVE</em> project will train 13 early-stage researchers (ESRs) in the testing and simulation of</p>
<p>eco-friendly powertrains, helping them to address the complex challenges related to noise emission and sound perception associated with downsized IC engines, electric motors and hybrids that come from transmission-induced NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) and drive line torsional vibrations. They will be working on brand new vehicle designs that maximise performance in terms of eco efficiency (i.e., gas emissions, fuel consumption, battery usage, etc.), power, NVH and, of course, cost.</p>
<p><strong>Vacancy description</strong></p>

<p>The ESR PhD track at Fraunhofer IWU targets the simulation-based development of novel gearbox design concepts which are characterised by blending lightweight technologies and low noise emission levels. The ESR will evaluate the influence of lightweight construction approaches on gearbox acoustics by means of simulations. The downsizing of drive trains often leads to lighter and more flexible structures. The higher elasticity of the system’s components directly affects the existing gear mesh excitation and the transfer paths of the gearbox. For example, higher flexibilities of the housing, shafts and gear blanks cause a more misalignment in the tooth contacts which can lead to higher system excitation and to worse acoustic performance. <strong>The aim of this ESR project is to help identify the risks and capabilities of lightweight designs in terms of the gearbox’s acoustic performance using simulation-based sensitivity analyses and parameter studies.</strong> In addition to the investigation of lightweight construction techniques, new production technologies, for example the additive manufacturing of gear wheels by selective laser melting, as well as acoustically promising materials (e.g. foam structures or meta-materials) will be part of the analysis. The combination of different lightweight approaches will lead to new possible design concepts for gearboxes. The potential and risks of these cutting-edge designs will be benchmarked against the best current Systems.</p>

The PhD programme entitled ‘Towards a cognitive computer architecture based on memristive devices: developing Short- and Long-Term Memory’ is part of a larger project, with the overarching goal to build a pattern- completion memory for neuromorphic chips. This experimental project will focus on the design and testing of circuit boards with memristive devices and microcontrollers. The objective is to build neural network for different learning schemes based on simple circuits. Different types of memristive devices have been demonstrated and actively researched in Banerjee lab. The student will benefit from this knowledge and will expand on developing new approaches to study essential device characteristics such as reliability of switching process, statistical (in)variance and the underlying process that controls the nonvolatile and multilevel nature of the devices in a circuit. The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Network (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2019-859957) “Intelligent Prognostics and Health Management in Composite Structures” (ENHAnCE) invites applications for 10 early-stage research (ESR) positions available with a starting date in the interval June 1st –Sept 1st 2020 for a period of three years. ENHAnCE will be based on 9 partner beneficiaries and 6 partner organisations involving universities, research organisations, government agencies and industries, and will perform cutting edge research and training in the field of intelligent prognostics of composite structures satisfying all Principles for Innovative Doctoral Training. The ENHAnCE project provides research and training opportunities for early-stage researchers in the fields of Prognostics and Health Management (PHM), structural health monitoring (SHM), Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE), Maintenance Modelling, Damage Modelling, Manufacturing Engineering and Smart Structures. Research within the network encompasses a number of disciplines like structural engineering, mathematics & physics, materials & manufacturing engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science.

 

The aim of the research programme is to provide the ESRs with the practical skills and knowledge so that they can perform top-level research, both in the academic and non-academic sectors. In addition, inter-sectorial collaboration is promoted through short-term secondments between academic and non-academic participants. All ESRs will also have the opportunity to enroll for a PhD degree.

    Project details:

    The optimization of advanced Lithium Ion Battery (LIB) manufacturing and cell design remains a challenging multi-variable task, subject to constraints like the desired final performance, the availability of raw materials, the cost, the safety, the environmental impact and the recyclability. The roadmap of the large scale European initiative Battery 2030+ highlights these issues and proposes research actions which aims at revolutionizing the way we conceive batteries today. Among them, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to carry out inverse design of materials interfaces is recognized as of paramount importance. The main objective of this PhD is to use AI to unravel interdependencies between manufacturing parameters, electrode properties, cell design and performance and using these algorithms for inverse design in the battery field.

    The main objective of this PhD is the development and demonstrate an innovative AI-driven platform able to carry out two complementary tasks: 1) unravel interdependencies between battery manufacturing parameters and electrode properties, cell design and performance; 2) carry out inverse design, i.e. predicting needed electrode properties (e.g. porosity, loading) to reach a desired performance at the cell level, and predicting manufacturing parameters needed to achieve electrodes with such properties.

    Specific Objective:

    • Set the database infrastructure from the batter characterization data available at LRCS and CIDETEC. Defining data and files standards.
    • Build and test AI models used to unravel interdependencies between the manufacturing parameters and the final electrode properties and cell design at different operating conditions.
    • Adapt AI to inverse design purposes.

The thesis expenses are covered by the ALISTORE-European Research Institute.

    The Laboratoire de Réactivité et Chimie des Solides (LRCS) was founded in 1968 and is a mixed research unit of CNRS and Université de Picardie Jules Verne (Amiens, France). LRCS employs more than 100 people representing more than 25 nationalities. LRCS is located in the beautiful city of Amiens, France.

    LRCS has a strong expertise on rechargeable battery technologies (lithium-ion batteries, lithium-air, sodium-ion, lithium sulfur, all-solid state batteries, redox flow batteries…) supported on deep expertise on materials synthesis and characterization, electrochemistry, multiscale computational techniques and artificial intelligence tools applied to battery research.

    Additionally, LRCS is strongly involved in partnership-oriented research and interdisciplinarity, in particular in the context of the ALISTORE European Research Institute (ERI) (involving more than 10 countries and 20 laboratories) and at the French level through the RS2E network which gathers 17 laboratories, 15 industrial partners and 3 public institutions engaging in rechargeable batteries and supercacitors research. RS2E and ALISTORE-ERI were both founded by the lab’s former director, Prof. Jean-Marie Tarascon.

    LRCS was/is involved in numerous European projects (FP7/H2020) such as EUROLIS, PUMA MIND, HELIS, POROUS4APP, NAIADES, SONAR...and it is hosting Prof. Alejandro A. Franco's ERC Consolidator project team (ARTISTIC). LRCS is strongly involved, through RS2E, in the core group of the Battery 2030+, the initiative for a long-term large-scale research program towards the European battery of the future.

    A leading-edge fundamental research lab, LRCS also seeks to facilitate technology transfer to the industry through RS2E’s pre-transfer equipment (18650 batteries prototyping, safety, upscaling). LRCS is also working closely with companies (Renault, EDF, Solvay, Safran, Umicore…) to give its findings a chance to reach the market and hopefully… your daily life!

    CIDETEC Energy Storage is specialised in creating new battery technologies according to specific challenges, and its ultimate transference to the industry. The institute has the capacity to develop complete products and processes and offers material validation, pilot manufacture, pack engineering and battery testing services. CIDETEC overall workforce consists of 180 employees, 95 % of whom are university graduates and 45 % PhD holders. Its volume of activity came up to € 13.1M in 2018. CIDETEC is located in the beautiful city of Donostia-San Sebastian, Spain.

    CIDETEC Energy Storage involves up to 60 specialized researchers distributed into two technological units: Materials for Energy –approx. 2/3 of the workforce with a background of chemistry, electrochemistry and materials- and Systems Engineering - mainly electrical and mechanical engineers. As a result of this approach, CIDETEC Energy Storage cooperates closely with the industry in the context of bilateral, direct contract research and product development projects, both at the National and International level.

    The Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA)

    INEA is an Executive Agency established by the European Commission to implement parts of EU funding programmes for transport, energy and telecommunications. The Agency’s mission is to provide its stakeholders with expertise and high-level programme management, whilst promoting synergies among programmes, in order to benefit economic growth and EU citizens.

    Two main programmes managed by INEA are:

    Description of the job

    The project manager will be responsible for a portfolio of transport research and innovation projects in one or more of the following five fields:

    • Batteries, electrical systems and management systems for electric vehicles;
    • Automated transport, intelligent transport systems and data management;
    • Clean propulsion, safety and smart services in surface transport;
    • Technologies, structures and materials for aviation and air mobility;
    • Clean propulsion, technologies and smart services in waterborne transport.

    The projects can cover a range of development levels, from lab-based research, through demonstration to market uptake. The project manager will work autonomously under the authority of a team leader. He/she will also collaborate fully with a wider team of colleagues in the Agency and the European Commission.

    The project manager will contribute to the development and implementation of relevant policies falling under EC treaties in the field of Transport research and innovation through the management of projects in the programmes under the responsibility of the Agency, primarily those relating to the delegated activities to be managed under the Horizon 2020 Transport Challenge and any other delegated programmes.

    Qualifications and experience required

    A. Eligibility criteria

    • Be owner of a CAST in the grade for which you are applying* OR be registered in the EPSO/CAST/P/4/2017**;
    • A level of education which corresponds to completed university studies of at least three years attested by a diploma OR, when in a member state of the European Union access to a profession of an equivalent level to function group IV is by State examination, professional training or any other equivalent procedure, the authority authorised to conclude contract of employment may agree to recognize this qualification as being equivalent to a university degree;
    • Thorough knowledge of one of the languages of the Communities and a satisfactory knowledge of another EU language to the extent necessary to perform his/her duties.

    * Candidates must be included in the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) database for contract agents in function group IV and have successfully passed the EPSO selection tests for that function group.     Essential:

    • Very good knowledge of English (written and spoken).

    Appointment and conditions of employment

    The jobholder will be assigned on the basis of a shortlist proposed by the selection committee.

    The basic monthly salary within this function group will depend on the number of years of relevant professional experience at appropriate level (in function group IV, either grade 13, grade 14 or grade 16).

    Selection procedure

    A - Written test (30 min)

    A case study in English designed to test:

    This test will be marked out of 40 (pass mark: 20).

    B – Oral test (30 min)

    Interview with a selection board in English to assess:

    • your communication, inter-personal and problem-solving skills

    This test will be marked out of 100 (pass mark: 50).

    Both the oral and written tests will be combined on a total of 140. Minimum mark: 84 out of 140.

    The PhD position is part of the Marie Curie Training Network ECO DRIVE which is a European project running from March 2020 until February 2024. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement number 858018. The coordinator of the project is the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. The project consortium consists of four European universities, four industrial companies (two automotive OEMs) and one research organisation.

    Noise and vibration in eco-efficient (i.e. mostly electric) powertrains is at the core of the ECO DRIVE project. It offers a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary research and training programme to Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) to provide Europe with a new generation of NVH research engineers who have a talent and a passion for the automotive industry. The ESRs will combine basic scientific research (method development, concept solutions, experimental lab tests, etc.) with practical, industry-focused training (validation of methods and tools on powertrain test benches, in full vehicle, etc.). The project will be very dynamic, with an emphasis on ensuring ESRs gain maximum benefit from moving between the research organisations and the industry partners.

    Within this project we are seeking an early‐stage researcher (ESR) for a duration of 36 months to join the Department of Acoustical Engineering at Fraunhofer IWU in Dresden. The earliest starting date is March 2020. The chosen candidate will be registered as a PhD student at KU Leuven's Noise and Vibration Research Group (www.mech.kuleuven.be/mod) which is part of the Mechanical Engineering Department and is headed by Prof. Wim Desmet. The position includes secondments to Siemens Industry Software (Belgium) and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium).

    Acoustical Engineering at Fraunhofer IWU

     

    Fraunhofer IWU is an Institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in Germany. The main research focus is on the development of intelligent production devices and the optimisation of related manufacturing processes. The Department of Acoustical Engineering has rich experience in the development of active and passive systems for noise and vibration control for a wide range of applications. Researchers are developing methodologies for prediction of acoustical phenomena in vehicles mostly for gearboxes and electrical drives. Simulation methods used cover noise excitation mechanisms and noise transfer within a system while taking into account subsystem interactions using multi-domain simulation approaches as well as data capture and analysis at bespoke test rigs.

    Project Background

     

    As manufacturers shift to vehicles that produce reduced levels of air pollution – with less particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and greenhouse gases – there are knock-on effects with respect to other forms of pollution, particularly noise pollution, which according to the World Health Organisation, comes second only to air pollution in its harmful effects and is responsible for hearing loss, learning problems in children and sleep disturbance. The problem is that attempts to reduce air pollution, e.g. by producing lightweight cars, often lead to increased levels of noise, due to complex mechano-acoustic effects. Also with electric vehicles (EVs), the absence of the damping effect of a large internal combustion (IC) engine means that intrusive sounds from other components create customer dissatisfaction and negatively affect people in close proximity to the vehicle. It is often wrongly assumed that EVs are silent; whereas in reality they create a great deal of high-frequency disturbance. To overcome some of the many challenges associated with these noise-related problems, the ECO DRIVE project will train 13 early-stage researchers (ESRs) in the testing and simulation of

    eco-friendly powertrains, helping them to address the complex challenges related to noise emission and sound perception associated with downsized IC engines, electric motors and hybrids that come from transmission-induced NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) and drive line torsional vibrations. They will be working on brand new vehicle designs that maximise performance in terms of eco efficiency (i.e., gas emissions, fuel consumption, battery usage, etc.), power, NVH and, of course, cost.

    Vacancy description

     

    The ESR PhD track at Fraunhofer IWU targets the simulation-based development of novel gearbox design concepts which are characterised by blending lightweight technologies and low noise emission levels. The ESR will evaluate the influence of lightweight construction approaches on gearbox acoustics by means of simulations. The downsizing of drive trains often leads to lighter and more flexible structures. The higher elasticity of the system’s components directly affects the existing gear mesh excitation and the transfer paths of the gearbox. For example, higher flexibilities of the housing, shafts and gear blanks cause a more misalignment in the tooth contacts which can lead to higher system excitation and to worse acoustic performance. The aim of this ESR project is to help identify the risks and capabilities of lightweight designs in terms of the gearbox’s acoustic performance using simulation-based sensitivity analyses and parameter studies. In addition to the investigation of lightweight construction techniques, new production technologies, for example the additive manufacturing of gear wheels by selective laser melting, as well as acoustically promising materials (e.g. foam structures or meta-materials) will be part of the analysis. The combination of different lightweight approaches will lead to new possible design concepts for gearboxes. The potential and risks of these cutting-edge designs will be benchmarked against the best current Systems.

    We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate to work in an interdisciplinary environment under the supervision of Prof. Tamalika Banerjee at the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, University of Groningen, The Netherlands. The PhD programme entitled ‘Towards a cognitive computer architecture based on memristive devices: developing Short- and Long-Term Memory’ is part of a larger project, with the overarching goal to build a pattern- completion memory for neuromorphic chips. This experimental project will focus on the design and testing of circuit boards with memristive devices and microcontrollers. The objective is to build neural network for different learning schemes based on simple circuits. Different types of memristive devices have been demonstrated and actively researched in Banerjee lab. The student will benefit from this knowledge and will expand on developing new approaches to study essential device characteristics such as reliability of switching process, statistical (in)variance and the underlying process that controls the nonvolatile and multilevel nature of the devices in a circuit. This project will be carried out in close collaboration with CogniGron partners, Prof. Niels Taatgen and Dr Jelmer Borst along with a second PhD student.

    The vacancy:

    Electrophysiological measurements such as ECG, EEG and EMG are used in a variety of clinical applications, such as cardiac status monitoring in high-care hospital units, diagnosis and monitoring of epilepsy, and electrophysiological pregnancy monitoring. There is a strong need and potential to broaden the range of applications of these measurements by building on advances in pathophysiological mathematical modeling, microelectronic bioamplifier design, signal processing, and artificial intelligence. For example, advances in microelectronics foreshadow low-power contactless or semi-contactless measurements of large arrays of electrophysiological signals, potentially permitting reliable measurements in extramural settings, unobtrusive assessment of neonatal EEG, and high-resolution electrocardiographic mapping for atrial fibrillation treatment planning.

    To materialize this potential we are looking for a candidate with a strong background in biomedical sensing, signal processing and machine learning, affinity and familiarity with mixed-signal microelectronics and the ability and interest to work closely with medical doctors in order to build up essential pathophysiological and sensor artifact knowledge, capture it in mathematical models, and exploit these models in hybrid model-based/data-driven signal analysis and interpretation approaches.
